While setting up a home network, it is necessary to configure the components of security. Hackers and malware can enter your home network and steal your data and misuse your home network. Generally, networks are equipped with security features by default. Hackers know the default security features. So these security features should be changed. There are certain tips following which home networks can be made secure.
Most of the home network comes with default username and passwords. Generally people do not change them. These are set by default and hackers know them very well. So, it is suggested that user name and password should be changed immediately after logging in for the first time.
The SSID is set by default in the home network. SSID refers to local area network or LAN or home network. The SSID is set by default password which is known to the hackers. So, the SSID password should be changed immediately.
These are the basic security measures for the home network security. There are some other steps to be taken to protect the home network. Following are the minor tips to protect home network from undesirable use:
- Router access is secured by the firewall. The user should keep the firewall enabled to have the maximum security.
- Encryption should be used. It is means to secure data because it is transferred over a network. If the data is encrypted, it cannot be intercepted by a third party. So, it is necessary to encrypt the data while sending it to the destination.
- Most of the routers can reach one hundred feet of distance from your home by leakage. If the signals of router leaks outside your home, the data can be hacked by the hackers. So, the router should be positioned at the center of your home so that it may not be hacked by the neighbors.
- The network should be disabled while it is not in use. If it is not disabled, it can be detected by an unauthorized person.
- Dynamic IP addresses are often used in home networks. For this, a technology named as DHCP is set up in the home network. Unfortunately, this technology is misused by the hackers to obtain your valid IP address from the DHPC of your home network. So, it is suggested that this DHCP should be turned off. A fixed IP address should be set in its place. A private address should be set so as to guard against the direct reach of the hackers.
- A firewall is inbuilt in most of the home networks. It protects your network from attacks and malware. Generally it is turned on. But someone may turn it off. So, check it if it is turn off if you want your home network secure.
The most important thing that you have to decide is the amount of security you actually need and how much you want to spend while setting up a home network security. All wireless service routers offer a certain limit of security to the subscriber. But if you are not satisfied with their offerings then you may also create your own router according to your requirements and budget. But you can do this only if you have the expertise in this job. Otherwise it should be left to the experts.
