Your home network and computer may be at great risks if it not made secure. Your neighbor can join your network without your permission and can mine your data without authority. 1. WPA2 (Wi-Fi) Protected Access 2 is the latest technology for network security. It makes the data encrypted and controls the network. So, WPA encryption should be enabled instead of WEP because WEP keys are easily be cracked. WPA makes use a stronger technology for encryption which is hard to crack.

2. Create strong passwords for the network. There are certain things to remember while creating a password. The password should be as long as possible. Avoid using your name, date of birth, address or any dictionary word. It should be complicated and both alphabetical and numerals should be included in it. You should not keep a password for long. It should be changed monthly or weekly.

3. Often wireless home network is used for file sharing. It gives the hackers direct access to your files in computer. Only such files should be shared which are not confidential. File sharing should be tuned off immediately after use. The network should be logged off and should not be kept idle for a long time.

4. A static IP Address should be assigned to the devices. It is an alternative to DHCP in all Internet Protocol networks. Static IP address supports name resolution. It gives the better security to home network. It also avoids potential address conflicts.

5. There is an inbuilt firewall in every computer operating system. It prevents from any undesirable intrusion coming from outside. Widow firewall is always turned on. But sometimes it has to be turned off and remain so unknowingly. The windows gives notifications about it but it may skip your eyes. So, make sure that your windows firewall is turned on. It is the least expensive way to secure your home network.

6. Your network may be unsecure if the access point and router is not suitably positioned. Sometimes wireless signals are so strong that they may leak outside your home. Hacker may take advantage of it. The best thing is that the access point should be located at the middle of the house rather than in a corner of the house.

7. A home network should be logged off when it is idle. An idle network is more prone to attacks by hackers. So, the residential network should not be left idle for a long time. If there is no need of the connection, it should be disconnected.
